The
Good Life Inn, High Rolls, NM – Aptly named,
this place is enchanting. Located 20 minutes from the must see White Sands
National Park (where you can go sledding down the dunes, so fun!). The Good
Life Inn is tied with El Portal of Sedona as my very favorite Bed &
Breakfast. With only 3 rooms, be sure to make reservations, this place is
out of the way, relaxing and cozy.
The owners, Guillian and Melise make your experience unforgettable, when
staying you MUST
have them cook you dinner, restaurant style in tuxedo style uniforms and
served in your room it is a memorable (and very romantic) dinner to savor;
if you’re not in the mood for a three course meal…they have casual dining
options as well. Their attention to detail and the obvious care and love
they put into every aspect of your stay makes your time with them a vacation
to remember. I will return soon. Best of all…the prices…unbeatable!
Don’t let the affordability fool you, it’s fabulous! (http://www.goodlifeinn.com)

Catherine Karnow, world-renowned photographer for magazines such as National
Geographic and Sunset, stayed at Good Life Inn the first summer we were
open, in 2000.
When her assistant called to make the arrangements,
she
insisted that she had done her research and that we were
"the best lodging
establishment in the area."
Guillian, who had answered her call, was amazed and surprised,
since
we had only been open one month.
She kept asking Catherine's
assistant, "Are you sure you have the right place?"
Catherine
stayed three days, wrote a precious poem in our guestbook
and included us in this beautiful book
Escape to the American Desert, from Fodor's
hardcover series.
"Escape the heat of
Alamogordo,
15 minutes away amid the pines at Good Life Inn Bed and Breakfast,
a cozy
inn beside a stream in the mountains."

High Rolls and the annual Cherry Festival are
mentioned in the June 2003 issue of Sunset Magazine. "In the
Sacramento Mountains, it's said that 'if you ever lie down and start
rolling, you won't stop until you reach the next county.' hence this town's
name of High Rolls. The temperatures at this altitude are perfect for
growing cherries, and the community celebrates the season' bounty at the
annual High Rolls-Mountain Park Cherry Festival. Fresh picked local
cherries, cherry pie, cider and ice cream, plus a barbecue, crafts, and live
music make this an even families will enjoy." (The Cherry Festival is
held annually, the third weekend in June. There is Apple Festival the
third weekend every October.) |

Timberon Mountaineer - July 2001 Issue
The Good Life
by Danielle Hinesly
Strolling through a meadow of wild growing apple trees and
teasing your
fingertips in a cold-mountain stream--ahhh that's the life! And the
innkeepers of Good Life Inn offer it everyday to weary business
folks,
nerve-fried parents or love-sick honeymooners.
Guillian and Melise have expertly
coupled the ease of modern-day conveniences with the
refreshment of
nature at their bed & breakfast tucked off a mountain road in High Rolls,
New Mexico.
Twinkling lights line its rustic wood
balconies. A private Jacuzzi relaxes tired muscles and offers playful
intimacy.
A visit to the outdoor porch swing clears the head.
Even the painting on the wall is fresh and full of interesting details.
"We like to see people have fun and be
comfortable. We like helping people enjoy themselves and relax,"
Guillian,
co-owner of the Inn says.
The inn opened in February 2000 with its
first guests celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary. "We've had a
variety of guests over this last year," Melise says. "We've had single
professionals stay here while they work on projects. Couples often
come to take mini-vacations for a night or two. Once we had a very
special young couple stay with us for two nights. They were in a lot
of physical pain, but were happy and in love" she says, "Their loves
inspired us...and they still e-mail." "The line gets blurred between
friends and business. We enjoy this so much" Guillian explains.
Melise and Guillian have a quiet yet active
faith in God which is demonstrated in their low-profile service. They
don't hover over their guests, but rather work in the background to create a
refreshing experience. "In a day when self-service has become
the norm, we want to offer elegant service, down to the most minute detail." Guillian says.
"With TVs, refrigerators and microwaves in
all three suites, guests could stay hidden away in their rooms if they'd
like," Melise says. They can even choose breakfast privately served
with white linens, glass goblets and china plates...or relax in an open
dining room or outdoors on a patio enjoying the morning birds.
"This kind of business is in my blood,"
Guillian chuckles. Guillian's grandmother was Katie Tavizon of
El Paso's famous Parker Hotel. "I love doing this."
Both women had no illusions about the hard,
unrelenting work running a bed and breakfast. "We have great support
from friends and family. Rick Kommer does a great job handling our
heavy maintenance. But the day in and day out duties are ongoing,"
Melise says. "For some reason, Guillian makes the beds and I do the
bathrooms."
The buck stops with them. Bringing
"people and technical skills" to the business, with backgrounds in educations
and supervisory technical positions has equipped them fro running a
first-rate inn. They build their web site, manage the finances, paint,
tile and even cook the delicious meals on site.
"We hadn't planned to own and operate a bed
and breakfast," Melise explains, "But it's perfect, and we realize it's what
were meant to do."

Fort Bliss Monitor - August 3, 2000
Why a Bed and Breakfast, You Say?
(An article that appeared in
the Fort Bliss Newspaper in El Paso, Texas.
With many thanks to the Dizas, who have remained true to their promise of "spreading the word"
about Good Life Inn B&B!)
So you’re stationed here and you think there’s no place to go
and nothing to do. I guess that really depends on what you are looking
for! Well, my wife, Grace and I found a hidden secret tucked away only an
hour and a half drive from our house in El Paso. Good Life Inn Bed and Breakfast is such a place.
It may be hidden but certainly is no secret. The inn just opened this
month and is located in Karr Canyon "…nestled in a sprawling meadow,
amongst the pines, the mountains and the lullaby of the stream," perfectly
chosen words the innkeepers use to describe it.
Grace & I were still unwinding from an out of town
vacation and were not quite ready to get back into the grind of things. So
we searched the Web literally looking for something to do in the vicinity
of El Paso for a couple more days. The weather was still a scorching 98
degrees outside so we didn’t mind a little trip north. The swamp cooler of
our house wasn’t cooling much of anything anyway! So after checking out
the web links of New Mexico State Parks, we came across one of the
recreation/lodging sites that linked Cloudcroft, NM in one of the search
engines. We found one that seemed nice and reasonably priced for two
people especially with the amenities they described. So we packed an
overnight bag, a disposable camera and left the following morning. The
temperature difference was the first thing we noticed as we drove up in
elevation through winding roads up the mountains. It was the middle of the
day when we arrived and it was an unbelievable 74 degrees outside. The
mountainous pine forest and great climate made us feel we were in a
recreation park in one of the Northwest states! We arrived at the inn and
met one of the founders, Guillian, who immediately gave us a tour of the
place and explained to us what this inn has to offer. Each suite is
complete with private baths, fridge, microwave,
TV/VCR combination
with full access to a complimentary movie library,
CD player, and a table for two for in-suite dining. We were really
impressed. Grace was more impressed with the home designing and how each
suite had a certain theme: Tea Rose Suite, The Kokopelli Suite, and
Secret Garden Suite. I just had to appreciate how much work must have
gone into this house to make it such a cozy atmosphere. O.K, I’ll be
honest. I really wanted to appreciate getting into that indoor Jacuzzi!
This was one of the most relaxing times I’ve had since our honeymoon on
Boracay Island, Philippines. No, there wasn’t scuba diving or fishing, but
there were enough relaxing and outdoor activities there. Cloudcroft is
only minutes away if you like mountain biking, horseback riding, or just
walking the trails. The inn will also keep you busy if you want to limit
the outdoor activities like the Jacuzzi I mentioned, a gym/workout room,
or the billiard/game room. Or you can just relax near the running stream
next to the house to enjoy that book you finally wanted to read (and
finish!). This place will certainly be awesome when we come back in the
winter with the snowfall and the skiing close by. There’s a "fireside
room" with big screen TV that will surely keep you warm from the cold snow
outside. I just have to mention that Jacuzzi again that would definitely
keep you warm!
So if you’d like more information especially about the
different suites you can reserve and the inn’s amenities, you can contact
Guillian or Melise at (575) 682-2953 or visit
their website at
www.goodlifeinn.com. They’re
continually improving the website so you will eventually see pictures
and a glimpse of their inn. |
